About Us

The Cascade Brass Quintet came into being as a result of Bruce Emerson’s search for four other musicians who were interested in playing brass quintet music. The group began playing in the spring of 2000.  Four out of the five founding members are still part of the group today!

Who We Are...

Bruce Emerson, trombone. Bruce was born in Oregon and raised in Montana. Bruce is a member of the Central Oregon Symphony and has performed with the Cascade Winds Symphonic Band, the COCC Big Band Jazz, the Cascade Chorale, and many other Central Oregon groups and ensembles. Bruce’s love of quintet music is what brought the group together in the summer of 2000.  When not playing music or farming Dr. Emerson is a Professor of Physics at Central Oregon Community College.

Greg Byers, trumpet, flugelhorn, and vocals. After growing up in Bend Greg played full-time in the Marine Corps before he returned to Bend as a teacher and performer on trumpet and bass guitar. He does studio work for several professional musicians, is a member of the Betty Berger Big Band and has played with the Central Oregon Symphony and the Cascade Winds Symphonic Band. He is a dealer for Kanstul brass instruments.

Bob Shimek, trumpet, flugelhorn, and euphonium.  Bob is a member of the Central Oregon Symphony, Cascade Winds Symphonic Band (euphonium), COCC Big Band, and Cascade Horizons Band (tuba).  He also plays regularly with the Betty Berger Big Band, Obsidian Opera Orchestra and other local ensembles.  After retiring as an environmental consultant music has become a near full-time job for him as he combines teaching and performing.

Tom Barber, tuba and arranger. Tom is a member of the Central Oregon Symphony, the Wall Street Jazz Band, the Cascade Winds Symphonic Band, the Betty Berger Big Band (saxophone), and the Cascade Horizons Band (euphonium). He spent ten years as director of the COCC Big Band Jazz. Retired from a career as a music educator he writes many of the group’s arrangements when he finds spare time from riding his bicycle.

Tim Lynch, French Horn. Tim is originally from central Pennsylvania and recently made his way to Bend via the San Francisco Bay Area along with his wife, Jenny (a Bend native). Tim is a member of the Cascade Winds Symphonic Band and also performs with the Central Oregon Symphony. Tim was raised in a family of horn players, with his father and sister also playing horn. When Tim is not spending time with his wife and new baby or playing horn he consults with companies in the biomedical industry.
